With the opening of Appalachian State University’s new Turchin Center for the Visual Arts in May 2003, downtown Boone became the home of the largest visual arts center in all of northwestern North Carolina, southwest Virginia and northeast Tennessee.
The Center joins a proud community of fine art and craft galleries in the downtown area, including Hands Crafts Gallery, and the Watauga County Arts Council and Mazie Jones Gallery, located in the historic Jones House.
The Center is located at the edge of the university campus, on King Street, the main drag through downtown Boone. It is convenient to delightful restaurant, shopping and entertainment venues.
Featured in the Center’s magnificent Rosen Galleries is world-class art by many of the finest artists of the region, as well as artists of national and international renown.
More than just a museum, the Center is truly bridging the boundary between university and community with its multi-faceted purpose. Programs include the Community Art School, offering artists residencies and community art workshops in conjunction with the university’s Department of Art. Also offered are children’s programs, seniors’ programs and teachers’ art training programs, to name just a few.
